Nehru Jackets and Bandhgala Suits – A Consolidation of Indian Culture and Politics

Young generations mostly follow the Western dress forms but Eastern culture also has its influence in today’s market. Thus unique fashions like the Nehru Jackets and the Bandhgala suits are being revived all over the world. In any global event, the eastern dress form is shown off by wearing a kurta paired with Nehru jackets and a sari. Shri Jawaharlal Nehru, being a member of a Kashmiri-Pandit family, has an aristocratic style statement that suits the personality of Chacha Nehru and made him distinct among the bunch. Nehruji wore a long kurta which was an amalgamation of western cuts and traditional attire and he used to clip a red rose on his chest.

Nehru Jacket – The Evergreen Mens Ethnic Wear

Nehru Jacket is a conventional dress form, in which a kurta is styled with a sleeveless-buttoned jacket. Although the name of this form of the jacket is Nehru Jacket, he never wore this form of a jacket. This apparel form closely parallels the suit of Chacha Nehru but has a characteristic distinct look. Mandarin collar with no lapels, expresses a stricter and a military charm to the attire. This form of the jacket has a perfect body fitting and is usually shorter in comparison to the length of a general suit jacket. Men of distinction used to wear a black-colored Nehru Jacket with a red rose in the square front pocket for all key official events.

Bandhgala Suit – The Formal Indian Outfit

‘Band Gale ka coat’ is the most favored formal outfit since the 1940s. The bandhgala suit, or the Jodhpuri jacket, has dawned from the princely state of Jodhpur. Bandhgala Suit is also known as the ‘Eastern tuxedo’ because of its elegant silhouettes. This outfit has a closed collar and well-structured cuts, that complement the curves. Lengths and buttons play with the style of this dress form. They are usually cut straight with sleeves that range from three-quarter length to full length.

Jackets & Suits

The jackets and suits are traditionally embellished with cloth balls, and loops or buttons. Mostly wooden and plastic buttons are preferred regularly, and in case of occasions, decorative metal buttons, cufflinks are fastened with the jacket. Usually pocket-handkerchief and rose add to the persona of the wearer. Sober pastel-colored suits add to the personality of the wearer. The bandhgala kurtas and suits are paired with ‘churidar’ or tight-fitting trousers and mojari.

Nehru Jackets and Bandhgala Suits are the outfits that give an authoritative look of their own. These became the perfect formal wear of the North Indian males. Every generation mostly wears these suit forms on festive or national days.
